Kaho Olawe is a small Hawaiian island located roughly 8 miles south of Maui. Following the 1893 entry onto the Islands by the United States, and the dissolution of the Hawaiian monarchy, the Islands have been in the control of the United States Government. During World War II and the Vietnam War, the United States military conducted training exercises on the island of Kaho Olawe.

The military destroyed large portions of the island, left unexploded ordinance over many sections, and littered the island throughout with surplus military equipment and parts. The Hawaiians, through a lawsuit, sued for clean-up of the island and, in a settlement by Consent Order with the United States Navy, have begun the slow clean-up process.

Kaho Olawe is considered to be a sacred place to native Hawaiians and clean-up of the island is being coordinated by different non-profit and private organizations to ensure that the island is restored properly.
