The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) mission statement, as set forth on their website:

Working with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

The FWS responsibilities as set forth on their website:

- enforce Federal wildlife laws
- manage migratory bird populations
- restore nationally significant fisheries
- conserve and restore vital wildlife habitats
- protect and recover endangered species
- administer the Federal Aid program
- help other governments with conservation efforts
