"You know what's interesting about Washington? It's the kind of place where second-guessing has become second nature."

George W. Bush, President, May 2002

In keeping with the President's Lands Legacy Initiative of 2001, funds are provided to states and territories for species and habitat recovery actions on non-Federal land. The fund grants assistance to states and territories for monitoring delisted species and facilitating the transition of authority from the government to the states and territories. The grants provide financial assistance for conservation projects.

Some of the projects currently funded by the Cooperative are:

  • Florida Marine Turtle Portection Program
  • Conservation of Endangered Ozark Cave Species and Ecosystems
  • Lake Wales Ridge Plants (Florida Dept of Agriculture and Consumer Services)
  • Habitat Conservation Program (HCP) Grants
  • Candidate Conservation Agreement Grants
  • Recovery Land Acquisition Grants
    • Coachella Valley California ($1,000,000)
    • Stephen's Kangaroo Rat (California) ($1,000,000)
    • Balconies (Texas) ($1,500,000)
    • Alabama/Florida Sea Turtle ($1,500,000)
    • Washington County Utah ($1,000,000)
