Issues - Censorship
United States Constitution

"Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; ..."

United States Constitution, Amendment I
1787
(emphasis added)

The government is without the right to censor what we say or write, paint or print. The Constitution is clear about the freedom of speech and of the press.

Although the Founding Fathers could not have foreseen the computer age, the Internet, mobile communications, fax machines, or other forms of speech and written communication, they were thoughtful enough to avoid limitations. They knew that each individual must be free to govern what he sees and hears, speaks and writes.

Although Republicans and Democrats have moved many times to put limitations on free speech and the freedom of the press, to date their efforts have been largely unsuccessful. However, we must not let down our guard. The slow erosion of any right will ultimately result in the removal of the right altogether.

Never forget that World War II began with the burning of books.
