In truth, there is yet to be a definitive explanation or a compelling reason as to why dogs eat grass, plants and various other things in your garden. Although it had been suggested that dogs eat plants every time they don’t feel well. Because a dog vomits after it has eaten grass, there are dog owners who think of this as the dog’s way to get rid of what is making it feel sick in the first place. Another possible reason why do dogs eat grass can be because plants and grass smell good to the dogs. We all know that dogs investigate with their noses and their mouths. But this is likely to be improbable since dogs are also known to eat garbage, kitty litter or even cigarette butts sometimes!
One more possible reason behind this behavior is perhaps a dog can also get cravings to eat plants because they are omnivores like us humans. There are people who say however, that there are only specific types of dogs that actually eat grass, which is not something all dogs do. But IF it is a preference or some kind of craving, it could be that your dog is in need of certain nutrients they are not getting from the food they are eating now. If this is the case, make sure to discuss this with your vet in order to determine what type of food or diet you should put your dog on, even if it is only for the meantime.
