"Under the current circumstances, there is not even a minimum guarantee that the people can answer freely."

Human Rights Watch, report to the UN

According to military casualty information sources, the East Timor enforcement operation took the lives 15 military personnel during the UN-backed enforcement operation, although the actual number of American military personnel lost in East Timor are unavailable.

This loss of life was the result of the UN enforcement activities that the United States volunteered to support. These Americans died in a country with which we had no direct conflict. The numbers of civilians lost during the conflict is unavailable.
